Abstract: Based on the case of the Greece-Ottoman Empire and Greece-Turkey dyads, the authors suggest a novel approach for analyzing the interrelation between mutual military buildups, arms races, and militarized interstate disputes that focuses on the dyad as a unit of analysis. The goal is to overcome the stalemates in the quantitative study of the relationship between arms races, mutual military buildups and conflict onset in both the econometric analysis and the conflict processes schools of study.
